General:
Fibrous-rooted biennial or perennial herb from a taproot; stems branching, glabrous, 30-100 cm tall.
Leaves:
Spiny-toothed, blades of the basal leaves equal to or longer than the stalks, rounded to heart-shaped at the base.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of terminal, densely capitate umbellets without spokes, stalked; flowers white to blue.
Fruits:
Sphere-like to egg-shaped, flattened lengthwise, covered with scales or tubercles, sessile; without ribs. vol1_2

Habitat / Range

Mesic to dry fields and waste places in the lowland and montane zones; rare garden escape in S BC; introduced from Eurasia.
